Theapplication of gold leaf is particularly beloved by Murano glassmakers and is a "must" in Venetian glassmaking. The procedure for applying gold leaf is as follows: in blown glass, thin 24Kt gold foils are used, which are picked up with the hot glass mail that is covered with an additional pickup from the crucible. Following the final blowing, the metal leaf shatters into a gold dust, with very striking effects. The earliest known gold-leaf Venetian glassware dates from the second half of the 15th century. A fine example is the classic LOTO chandelier, which is made with very fine 24Kt gold leaf decoration and worked with the traditional twisted rigadin technique.
