Bottega Veneziana's Venetian mirrors are made using ancient Murano blown glass techniques and cold etched. Bottega Veneziana also specializes in creating custom designs(GALLERY)

Mirrors are indispensable furnishing complements, decorating the living room, bathroom, and bedrooms, but also, and above all, passing rooms. Venetian mirrors are a Made in Italy excellence, made of Murano glass, decorated with gold or silver leaf and engraved just as they once were.

Elegant and sumptuous pieces of furniture, Murano mirrors introduce a touch of originality by inserting a fine crafted object into the environment, capable of creating unique scenic effects.

The first production of Murano glass mirrors dates back to 1369, but it was not until around 1540 that the Venetian Vincenzo Redor perfected the technique of flattening glass sheets, creating a type of crystal-clear glass at the origin of the production of high-value mirrors that would soon become famous throughout the world. Murano-born Giuseppe Briati in the eighteenth century, in addition to inventing the famous Rezzonico-style chandeliers, would also produce frames and carved mirrors that were highly successful in the Courts of Europe.

Venetian mirrors were highly sought after: the highly refined production technique introduced important innovations, such as diamond point engraving and rich frames covered with blown glass and decorated with enamels.

The master mirror-makers of Murano were renowned and the secrets of the craft invaluable, so much so that in the 16th century craftsmen banded together in guilds to protect their techniques and prevent them from being copied. The Serenissima severely punished masters who jeopardized the monopoly on glass to the point of condemning to death those who revealed the secrets to reproduce Murano's prized mirrors abroad.

Even today, the Venetian mirror is sought after and widely used by designers for its ability to transform a room by creating perspective illusions giving the feeling of more space and depth. For example, incorporating an antique mirror into the decor is a great move, especially if the room traces contemporary style and needs a touch of originality. If the room has a dimly lit corner, placing a mirror in it will help highlight it and give it character, such as the ALESSANDRO model. A large Murano mirror is an ideal solution for furnishing a small, narrow room, because reflecting the walls will make it appear more spacious. An old house with very high ceilings will be enhanced by a mirror that runs the full height of it up to the floor, with a very dramatic effect, such as the IFIGENIA model, made "to measure"

Antique mirrors are excellent decorative elements when it comes to filling an empty wall: a mirror with a gilded, carved frame is a simple, elegant solution that can be adapted to any context. Hanging a mirror in front of an important and valuable element will enhance its value, such as a signed painting, an antique candelabra, or a refined chandelier.

An antique mirror, with a rich and elaborate frame, is a great way to bring life to a somewhat anonymous piece of furniture. Placed over a console or dresser, it will become the focal point of the room(SAVERIO).
